Marriage Preparation: Plan your wedding... prepare for your marriage

The flowers are ordered, the photographer is booked, dresses and tuxes are sized, and the vows are written... but have you talked about your expectations regarding your in-laws, parenting, money and sex? Are you on the same page when it comes to the “for worse” part of your vows? Avoid the common mistake of planning more for your wedding than for your marriage!

If you are looking to get the most out of your relationship by building a solid foundation prior to your wedding, you are in the right place! The marriage preparation program offered by a Winnipeg-based couples therapist is intended to help couples create rich and lasting relationships.

Marriage preparation sessions are provided in a private setting for both traditional and contemporary marriages. This can range from a first marriage, re-marriage, the blending of families, same-sex relationship, cross-cultural unions or other non-traditional partnerships.

Most people learn about relationships from their parents and grandparents. However, couples these days have higher expectations of intimacy, communication and compatibility than the generations before them. If we are not able to learn what we need to know from our parents, then we have to learn ourselves. It is important to develop the skills required to create and maintain the kind of relationship you want.

It is always a good idea to discuss your expectations and learn healthy relationship skills, even if your marriage official does not require pre-marital counselling. You will be better prepared to handle problems effectively and get what you want out of your relationship!

It is recommended that couples complete the program 6 months prior to their wedding, if possible. This allows time for reflection, practice and integration of new skills, and relationship growth.
